According to scientists from the Lunar Curation Laboratory in Houston, lunar soil, or regolith, was delivered from the moon by participants in the Apollo 17 program in 1972

Scientists opened a capsule with lunar soil, which astronauts Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt brought to earth on December 12, 1972. All this time, the samples taken from the satellite surface of our planet were sealed.

“Today we can take measurements that were simply not possible during the Apollo program,” says National Geographic research scientist Sarah Noble.

Noble added that capsule No. 73002 contained 430 grams of lunar material, which was collected near Lara Crater. She believes that the analysis of these samples will increase the scientific value of the Apollo program. This will help researchers better prepare astronauts for future missions.

Samples from the capsule are going to be studied using three-dimensional visualization, mass spectrometry and ultra-high resolution microtomy.

It is noted that in the period from 1969 to 1972, six expeditions under the Apollo program delivered a total of 382 kg of fragments of lunar rocks, sand and dust from six different regions of the moon to the Earth.
