The LNER Class A4 4468 Mallard steam engine became famous after 1938 when it was named the fastest among steam engines. In all likelihood, this record is no longer breaking, because the steam engines have long ceased to build.
July 3, 1938 LNER Class A4 4468 Mallard set a world record, accelerating to 203 km/h. But even this did not become an occasion for mass production of this model. Perhaps the main reason was the impending World War II,
writes "Popular mechanics.”
The steam locomotive was designed by Nigel Graceley for high-speed travel. The contours of its fairing were tested in a wind tunnel at speeds above 100 mph (160 km/h). The LNER Class A4 4468 Mallard was used until 1963. During operation, it covered almost 2.4 million km.
Today, this record-breaking steam locomotive is at the National Railroad Museum in York.
Recall that recently, Tesla introduced
electric crossovers Tesla Model X, which will deliver NASA astronauts to rockets for future SpaceX missions.
