Engineers from Northvolt (Sweden) have created a battery for electric cars from recycled electronics. Recycling of lithium-ion batteries will be carried out at the Swedish plant.

According to Northvolt representatives, the start of the program, which is aimed at recycling old batteries, has already taken place at the Wester laboratory.

The company plans to make the production of electric vehicles as environmentally friendly as possible. The idea of engineers will help to recreate up to 95% of metals without re-polluting the environment. At the same time, the quality of the recycled metal will not differ from the new one.

“We have been able to create new batteries from recycled material using special hydrometallurgical processing technologies. We cleaned the metals from residual impurities using a special aqueous solution,” said Emma Nerenheim (Director of Environment at Northvolt).

The company plans to increase its impressive scale in the production of recycled batteries by 2020. After the expansion of production, Revolt Ett (an electronic waste processing plant) will be able to receive more than 100 thousand tons of raw materials per year.
