6 minutes and 5,336 seconds it took an electric car Volkswagen I.D. R to overcome the 22.8 km of the Northern Loop on the legendary Nurburgring race track. This result is 40.6 seconds faster than the previous record set in 2017 by the Chinese electric car NIO EP9.

The “Northern loop” of the Nurburgring race track is considered one of the most difficult racing sites on the planet. But the Volkswagen I.D. R has been designed with the features of such ring roads. It was intended to participate in high-speed races to the peak of Pikes Peak in Colorado.

In the conditions of mountain heights and low pressure, electric cars really go around cars using ICE. A year ago, 680-strong I.D. R has already set an absolute record here, breaking 20 km of climb in 7 minutes and 54 seconds.

As for the Nuremberg track, electric cars are not very successful here - they are inferior to traditional race cars. The record belongs to Porsche and is 5 minutes and 16.55 seconds. But the speed gap should narrow as the pilot I.D. R Romain Dumas is sure that in a year he will be able to conquer the Northern Loop.
