Nearly 30 million fingerprints from 100 countries were online. A major leak of personal data was made by a company specializing in cyber security.
vpnMentor, an online security company, has detected a “leak” of a huge amount of personal data. First of all, this concerned their colleagues, Suprema, who were engaged in supporting the Biostar 2 cybersecurity platform.
Biostar 2 system - biometric electronic locks that are used to control access to individual parts of protected objects. They are used by 700 companies in 83 countries. The management of these locks is carried out using face recognition technology and fingerprinting.
These biometric data were revealed by vpnMentor on August 5th. After the specialists of this company announced this, personal data was removed from public access. At the same time, Suprema did not comment on the data leak.
VpnMentor experts said they didn’t know exactly how long the user’s personal data was not protected. Their volume was very significant - 32 GB of data containing almost 27.8 million records with biometrics and personal data. Information about passwords was stored in text documents, and fingerprints - in free access for copying.
vpnMentor drew attention to the catastrophic nature of this situation. After all, it is not known what type of data was publicly available, as well as how much they spent there.
