An innovative security feature was developed in conjunction with security provider Autoliv. The novelty is designed to provide protection for drivers in an accident.
The existing pillow option is a fabric chamber, which inflates when a car collides with an obstacle. Under ideal conditions, the driver’s head is located in the center of the airbag. Such a scheme cannot guarantee full protection. Especially if cars collide at an angle.
A novelty developed by Honda is a three-dimensional airbag, where the traditional design is complemented by two vertical air bags on the sides and a soft fabric section between them. This reduces the risk of neck injury due to a head turn at the moment of contact with the airbag.
The technology was borrowed from a baseball glove. She was practiced at a security research center in Raymond, Ohio. According to the test results, the effectiveness of a three-section airbag was confirmed. Now the automaker plans to install it on all new models.
