Australian oceanologists spoke about the prospects for the existence of the Great Barrier Reef. They lowered their forecast from "bad" to "very bad." The main reason is the rise in ocean temperature and the death of corals.

Coral bleaching is a planetary disaster. It especially manifests itself in places of their accumulation - on reefs and atolls.

Coral polyp is a tropical animal that lives in warm water. But even his thermophilicity has a limit. If the temperature rises above a fixed limit, then the polyp dies. If this occurs with many polyps, reef bleaching occurs. And if before he played with bright colors, now it is a gray desert. There can no longer survive the inhabitants of the oceans and seas.

According to the report on the status of the Management of the Marine Park of the Great Barrier Reef, which is prepared by experts once every five years, the forecast for the conservation of the reef and the associated biocenosis has dropped by one step. The conservation of the natural complex, which occupies 133,360 square miles, remains in question.

“Global action to tackle climate change is critical to slowing down the degradation of the reef ecosystem and supporting its restoration,” the report said. Such actions will complement and significantly increase the effectiveness of actions on the reef and in its basin.”

The main reason for the deterioration of the reef, scientists call an increase in the area of corals that died as a result of discoloration.
