Scientists have found a new type of electric eels, which can shock more than any animal on earth.
Electrophorus voltai is a creature that can discharge 860 V of electricity in one hit. If we compare it with other electric eels, then the energy of their impact is 650 V. This is quite enough to cause pain to an adult.
The potential shock of electric eels of E. varii is 572 V. It is also one of the recently identified species. Research in this area has made it possible to take a fresh look at these fish from the anthem-like order.
Previously believed that there was only one species, E. electricus, discovered 250 years ago. But the findings of scientists testify to the diversity of life in the Amazon. It was there that research was conducted.
“Our analysis easily identifies the three main lines that diverged during the Miocene and Pliocene, two of which deserve recognition as new species. For one of the new species, we recorded a discharge of 860 V, which is significantly higher than 650 V, which makes these eels the strongest living bioelectric generator,” the researchers say.
The reason electric acne can develop such power is the need to adapt to the conditions of high mountain waters. Water in this region is characterized by low conductivity.
