Crystals from the eyes: a resident of Armenia cries with “diamond tears”

A 22-year-old girl from Armenia has formed solid transparent crystals instead of tears for several months. The reason for such an unusual physiological phenomenon was eye injury.

According to the statement of Satenik Karazian herself, every day she has to extract up to fifty “pebbles” from her eyes. Their hardness and sharp edges are the main reasons that cause the girl inconvenience. It is possible that one day one of them can seriously injure the eyeball.

The crystals that were removed from Satenik's eyes were sent for examination. But its results are still unknown. Doctors cannot make final statements about her diagnosis until they are received. They do not refuse to provide assistance.

“Such a pathology rarely happens, so doctors may have difficulty identifying the causes of this condition. A tear is a biological fluid that is similar in state to the composition of the blood, and therefore, in certain situations - genetic or inflammatory diseases of the eye, but also of the body as a whole - violations in its composition can occur. In a tear there are proteins, fats, certain trace elements, it has a certain ionic composition, and those salts that enter it, at an increased concentration, can cause acceleration of crystallization. Proteins in tears can also increase its density,” explained ophthalmologist Tatyana Shilova.

A full examination of the patient will help doctors determine the exact diagnosis and prescribe treatment.
