The statement of the German philosopher that everything that does not kill us makes you stronger, modern scientists tried to verify. After all, it is often used out of place and out of place. In particular, we will focus on career growth.

The information was analyzed by scientists who, at the beginning of their careers, applied for R01 grants from the National Institute of Health (NIH). The indicative period is 1990-2005. Some of them received grants, some did not.

The assessment of the activity and plans of the applicant in points was considered. The grant was received by those who scored the sum of points above the entrance.

The authors of the study were primarily interested in the category of scientists who scored a little higher than the passing grade, and those who did not reach it a little. According to researchers, this approach allowed us to assume that the scientific level of the participants in both groups is approximately the same.

In these two categories, the authors studied data on the scientific publications of these scientists over the next ten years. To be more precise, the number of published articles, particularly successful in the scientific community of publications.

As it turned out, in the first 5 years, scientists who have not received grants publish fewer articles than those who received them. But later they still overtake their more successful colleagues. It was noted that the publication of the “hit” among the so-called losers is 6.1% higher than that of the award-winning colleagues.
