Found a previously unknown autograph of Nikolai Gogol

A previously unknown record from the church book, made by Nikolai Gogol, was discovered in the Main Archival Administration of Moscow. According to her, the writer became the godfather of Nikolai Khomyakov, who later became one of the leaders of the Octobrist party, a member of the II-IV State Duma and the chairman of the III Duma, a participant in the White movement.

The previously unknown autograph of Nikolai Gogol was found in the Main Archival Directorate of Moscow. It was taken from the church book of the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker on the Sands.

“It turned out that the classic left a signature in the metric book of his godson,” said the head of the Glavarchiv Yaroslav Onopenko.

The main reason why the writer became the godfather is the spiritual closeness of Nikolai Gogol and Alexei Khomyakov, his wife Catherine, the sister of the poet Nikolai Yazykov.

The baptism took place on January 31, 1850. In the metric book of the church in the column "Title, first name, patronymic and last name of the perpetrators" is really listed "8th grade official Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol."

In the column “Attachment of witnesses to the record at will,” the writer wrote with his own hand: “I testify to the accuracy of the record: Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol, the recipient of the 8th grade newborn”. The authenticity of the signature is confirmed by the spelling of letters and the characteristic stroke at the end of the surname, which coincide with the author’s already known autographs.
