A year ago, Google introduced the Titan Security Key hardware keys, which have gained moderate popularity. Now she has released a similar device, but with a USB-C type connector.

The novelty, unlike its predecessor, does not support NFC. But this fact should not affect the usability of it. Even without a special adapter, the key can be inserted into most modern smartphones, tablets and PCs.

Titan works on universal two-factor authentication. The FIDO U2F protocol allows the key to connect to devices without first installing drivers. At the moment, a similar level of security is supported by all the company's services through various browsers. This also applies to the social network Facebook, many banks, operating systems and some applications.

The authentication procedure is as follows:
- the key is inserted into the device;
- login and password are entered;
- the application asks to press a button on the key;
- access is opened.

According to the developers, between the second and fourth steps there are several important processes. First of all, the correct login and password are checked. Further, the presence of a registered key.

If the key is backed up to a specific account, the server sends a request to the client device, which can only be correctly processed by the key. Until the user clicks the button, the answer will not be generated by the key and will not go anywhere.

The purpose of the procedure is to minimize the imitation of the key by malicious software. And only after the server receives the cipher of the second authentication factor, the user gets access.

Before you start using the key, you need to register it in the place where it will protect the entrance.
