In the summer, NASA turned off one of the Van Allen Probes satellites that studied the Earth’s radiation belts. Recently, the second of them has run out of fuel and has also been shut off.

Van Allen Probes are NASA satellites designed to study the magnetosphere. Places where high-energy charged particles accumulate. Understanding their characteristics and dynamics allows scientists to plan missions and develop spacecraft.

Both satellites were launched in August 2012 using the Atlas V booster rocket. It was initially assumed that they would have to work 2 years. But their mission lasted and ended only this year.

At the beginning of 2019, Van Allen Probes satellites were sent into a circular orbit, which will gradually decrease and allow them to enter the earth's atmosphere. This will allow the devices to burn out and not become space debris.

In July 2019, the first satellite, Probe B, was turned off, and in August, Probe A. Both vehicles ran out of fuel.
