This conclusion was reached by specialists from the Swiss University of Zurich. And this concerns not only the number of pets, but their owners.

According to the lead author of the study, microbiologist Magdalena Nüesch-Inderbinen, the opinion that the ancestors of cats and dogs ate exclusively meat, so this diet will not harm modern pets, is wrong.

As test samples, scientists took 51 types of feed from Swiss and Austrian producers. Their exact list in the interest of research has not yet been published. After all, we are talking about a general pattern.

Researchers reported that 72.5% of the samples contained enterobacteria. Moreover, their number exceeded the established by the EU in relation to the safety of pet food norm.

In 63% of the samples, antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria were found. In 4%, salmonella, a highly tolerated pathogen, is one of the most common sources of food poisoning in both humans and domestic animals.

Magdalena Nüesch-Inderbinen stated that raw meat feeds for animals are far more risky than previously thought. Dog and cat owners are strongly advised to wash their hands thoroughly after contact with them. Also, do not forget about the increased risk of bacterial diseases in pets.
