The popularity of smartphones in which dark pixels do not just cover the luminous substrate, but cease to glow themselves, is growing. It is believed that gadgets with AMOLED screens save power. Now it is confirmed experimentally.

Recently, a video with multi-stage testing was published: the smartphone was tested in different modes when the dark and light themes were turned on. The difference in battery life was 30% of the battery capacity.

For the experiment, robotic manipulators were used that simulated user actions in different applications.

Test smartphone - iPhone XS Max based on iOS operating system. It was tested in applications that do not require additional modifications by the user. They natively support the "dark" side. For example, posts, Twitter, YouTube, and Google Maps.

According to the tester, the results may not coincide with real data in relation to specific users and their smartphones. This is because not all applications support the dark side. Also on the test sample, the display brightness was set to 200 nits. With automatic adjustment of this indicator, the software changes it in a fairly wide range.

Since a dark theme reduces eye strain, its use can be justified not only on smartphones in OLED screens.
