Scientists from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory discovered the amazing phenomenon of the two moons of Neptune - Naiad and Talassa seemed to be dancing
The dance of the satellites of Neptune - Naiad and Talassa is a series of oscillatory movements, due to which their orbits do not intersect. If there was a person on one of the satellites, then he could see another satellite either above or below him. Astronomers have called this phenomenon the "dance of avoidance," the magazine Popular Mechanics reports, citing preprint articles from the JPL website.
Scientists note that satellites regularly approach each other. The minimum distance at such moments between them reaches more than 3.5 thousand km. But, despite such an insignificant distance, they do not collide.
According to one of the authors of the discovery, Marina Brozovic from JPL, although astronomers know many cases of orbital resonance, the Neptunian is by far the most bizarre.
