Earth passed perihelion, or the point of its orbit closest to the Sun. This event occurred on the morning of January 5, 2020.

Our planet, like many others, rotates in an elongated elliptical orbit. At different times, it becomes closer to the main body of the system, then farther from it. The closest point to the sun in the orbit of a planet or other celestial body in the solar system is called perihelion. The orbital point farthest from the Sun is aphelion, reports "Popular mechanics.”

In aphelion, the distance from the Earth to the central luminary is 152.1 million km. In 2020, the Earth will be held on July 6, 2020. Yesterday, January 5, our planet passed perihelion and ended up at 147.09 million km from the Sun. Because of this, the visible diameter of the star has become about 1.5% more than average.

Scientists claim that changing the distance from Earth to the Sun does not affect the climate of our planet.

Also yesterday, the largest flower on the planet. Rafflesia, a parasite plant, which spends most of its life in the tissues of the host plant, became the record holder. Its diameter was almost 122 cm.
