Zhongdong village in the mountainous Chinese province of Guangzhou is considered the only permanent settlement in a natural cave in the country. You can get to this settlement, located at an altitude of 1800 meters above sea level, only on foot. Climbing takes an hour, and due to the inaccessibility of the locals it is not easy.
The cave is located high in the mountains and can only be reached on foot. About 100 people live here. Residents raise livestock, since the nearest market is an hour and a half on foot in the mountains.
To make matters worse, the government said that “China is not a cave people,” and closed the village school back in early 2011. Now children have to walk two hours each morning to another school.
To improve the living conditions in the village, the elders tried to persuade the local government to build a road and connect the settlement with the existing infrastructure. Although there is television in the village of Zhongdong and sometimes newspapers, in general it is cut off from the rest of the world.
The village even has its own basketball court.
