Flexible screens of smartphones opened a kind of Pandora’s box for designers: the idea itself is incredibly cool, but not everyone can implement it “in hardware”. Various brands do not leave attempts, and now TCL, one of the leaders in this technology, has presented its vision of the phones of the future.
It was planned to show two unusual concept backgrounds at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, but the terrible coronavirus confused all the cards. Nevertheless, it is absolutely necessary to brag about achievements, therefore the company held a closed event for the press. According to the CNET portal, reporters were shown a dummy and a video of an engineering sample. Even in this format, the smartphone made an indelible impression - its body is pushed to the sides, and the screen literally wraps around the front surface and almost doubles.
So far, only three-dimensional animations of the concept and dummy photographs are available to the general public, but in the near future, perhaps, engineers will be able to finalize the gadget to a fully presentable appearance. So far, the excessive slowness of the entire mechanism stands out from serious shortcomings. Representatives of the press noted that after pressing the button until the screen is fully opened, too much time passes. Yes, an important feature of the smartphone is that the display is moved apart by a special electric drive, because with a manual mechanism it is easy to damage it. It is worth noting that the yet unnamed device will not appear on the market in this form exactly - it is a “purebred” concept.
This form factor has both significant advantages and obvious disadvantages. The former include the original design and the lack of bending marks, for which folding smartphones are criticized. It is also worth noting that half of the display hidden in the case is protected from external influences, which means that in everyday use such a gadget will be almost as reliable as the all-in-one monoblocks. However, it is not clear how the manufacturer will protect the structure from dust inside. And with this approach, firstly, it becomes even more dangerous, and secondly it will be practically impossible to remove. Well, of course, no one can yet say what will happen to such a screen if scratches appear on its protective coating.
