A computer virus called ILOVEYOU or LoveLetter hit many computers in 2000. Journalists managed to find its author. They believe that this person now lives in Manila and is engaged in repairing telephones there.

The author of the Filipino virus, Onela de Guzmán, claims that he invented it with the aim of stealing passwords and free access to the Internet. This 44-year-old man explained that he never sought to globalize the malware and regrets the damage that the world caused, writes BBC.

In May 2000, a computer virus affected about 45 million personal computers during the day. He rebooted the mail systems of organizations, as a result of which IT-specialists were forced to disconnect parts of the infrastructures. This in turn resulted in damage of billions of pounds.

Recall, on May 4, 2000, several users received an e-mail with an attached file called “LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU” (“love letter for you”). Malicious code overwrites files, steals passwords and automatically sends copies to all Microsoft Outlook contacts from the victim’s address book.

“I did not expect the virus to reach the United States and Europe, this is amazing,” said Filipino Onela de Guzmán in an interview for the Crime Dot Com website, which is preparing a book on cybercrime.

Recently, the “text bomb” was discovered in the latest version of iOS 13 — a combination of words, which when it appears on the screen causes a reboot of the device.
