The number of places unsuitable for life has increased on the planet — study
In a new study, scientists drew attention to the fact that in the world there are more and more places that may soon become unsuitable for life. The reason for this is global warming and high temperatures in some areas of the world.
In their work, scientists relied on temperature measurements using a wet thermometer. This is a parameter that is almost never mentioned in normal weather forecasts. This temperature is measured using a thermometer covered with a damp cloth. For a person, the actual survival threshold at this temperature is 35 degrees — the temperature at which he cannot cool himself with sweating (this is about 46 “ordinary” degrees at a humidity of 50%). And just this threshold, according to the observations of researchers in the world, is increasingly being exceeded.
Especially extreme temperatures are observed in the Persian Gulf, Pakistan, India, the USA and Mexico. It's about temperatures between 27 and 35 degrees. Europe is also an example in the study, when in 2003 high temperatures led to many deaths on the Old Continent. But then the temperature of the wet thermometer did not exceed 28 degrees.
To date, in cities like Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE and Pakistani Jacobobad, the threshold of 35 degrees has even been exceeded. Moreover, the study drew attention to the fact that the mass use of air conditioners under such conditions also (and all of these areas are densely populated), in turn, contributes to global warming due to the huge energy consumption.
