In the Atonement series of photographs, Tawny Chatmon photographer admires the beauty of black hair with a series of breathtaking portraits lined with 24ct gold.
Each photograph depicts a solemn child, dressed in ornate hand-gilded clothes inspired by the "Golden Phase" of Austrian artist Gustav Klimt.
“These portraits are designed to act as a redemptive measure to raise and exalt black beauty, traditions and culture, freeing us from negative stereotypes,” Chatmon said in a statement.
By imitating Klimt, an artist from Maryland hopes to evoke the same feelings as when considering some of the artist's works, such as “Kiss,” for example.
“I remember how attracted to the details, poses, of course, gold and grace,” she says of her initial reaction to her works.
Visually, Klimt’s use of gold and decorative elements aroused in the author “a strong sense of grace, splendor and beauty after the first discovery of his painting and has since remained in my subconscious.”
