Harlem, a district in the northern part of the New York borough of Manhattan, became the object of attention of the French photographer Jack Garofalo in the 1970s. The Frenchman spent six weeks in it and shot many photographs documenting the lives of its inhabitants.
While most of the district’s inhabitants were able to escape from poverty and leave Harlem, there were those who did not leave it. They simply could not afford to move and stayed there to live forever. The rest went in search of better schools, housing, work and safer streets,
informs Zagge.
Harlem of the 1970s was surrounded by difficulties and despair. But this did not mean that the district lacked cheerfulness. And pictures of Jack Garofalo confirm this.
