Duplex floors and thin wooden shutters share the living space of this multi-generation home in the Australian city of Newcastle, New South Wales.

The owner of the Vikki Place house of the same name needed a house in which she and her adult son, who came for a long time with a family of four, could be accommodated. The local architectural studio Curious Practice has begun to create a cozy home for several generations, which "does not imply separation between family members."

The house is located on land prone to flooding, so the living quarters are intended exclusively for the ground floor of the house, supported by a concrete block at ground level. On one side of the house is an open living and dining room.

Birch plywood was used to make simple kitchen cabinets with an open surface, the countertops of which are made of stainless steel. The rest of the space is decorated with a wood-burning stove, a lilac sofa and a long dark wood table where the family can enjoy their meal. A small staircase leads to the plywood-faced bedroom, which is located on a slightly raised platform at the back of the floor plan.

The traditional doors were lowered - instead of each room there are light wooden shutters that can be lowered if residents want privacy.

“Playing with levels allows architecture to act as furniture that can accommodate more or less guests for different occasions,” said architect Warren Haasnut.
