London-based Yellow Cloud Studio designed a triangular extension in glass and plywood for a Victorian home in Hackney. It turned out to be a rather nice and functional space, solving the problem of inconvenience.

The existing layout of the house included a north-facing triangular garden that was slightly higher than the lower ground floor and was accessed via a bulky external staircase from the ground floor. The extension to the house is triangular in shape.

Studio co-founder Eleni Soussoni said this was the biggest challenge in the work, as well as a key element of the design process. The outer staircase has been demolished, so an extension of 25 sq. M is located at the level of the lower ground floor.

It takes up most of the existing garden space, however the design and use of materials give the impression that the space is half outside.

Rather than squeezing the extension against the back of the original home to maximize the garden, the open-walled timber structure proudly crosses the center of the space and looks almost free-standing.

The annex is attached to the house with a thick strip of glazing that floods the structure and the back rooms of the house with natural light. The extension continues with a tapered glass skylight and a glass door that opens onto a small patio with built-in seating.
