British photographer Drew Gardner recreates historical photographs of famous historical figures with the help of their descendants. This project began 15 years ago when his mother mentioned that the man looked like his grandfather.

When composing portraits, the photographer is guided not only by the similarity of historical figures and their descendants. The primary task is to start conversations that can spark people's interest in history, conveys Drew Gardner's Zagge statement.

The Briton began his project with photography of Frederick Douglas, Lisa del Giocondo, Berthe Morisot and Napoleon. When choosing a personality, he is guided by the fame of the character, as well as his significance in the story. He then looks for paintings, photographs, and other images of that person, which exclude a significant number of perspectives. Then comes the search for a living family member of a historical person. Sometimes a photographer has to work for more than a dozen generations.

It is noted that in order to preserve the integrity of the original images, the Briton has to use vintage items. But elements that do not already exist in nature, such as rusty chains against the background of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's portrait, have to be recreated in physical or digital form.

Recently it was reported about a Frenchman who creates surreal collages. He uses clippings from old magazines to overlay modern photographs. Guillaume Chiron maintains his Instagram account, where he publishes the results of his work.
