The project to recreate the smells of medieval Europe is the brainchild of an international group of scientists. They plan to create a special online encyclopedia using artificial intelligence.

The essence of the project is to create a fixed base smells geographic points, architectural objects and people. And the first step in this work will be the development of a special application that will help analyze historical materials. The latter represent not only textual data, but also graphic data.

According to the project's leading specialists, their work should show how the perception of smells has changed over time. For example, if we talk about tobacco, then at first it had a more exotic flavor. Later, the smells of urban landscapes were added to it, making it more familiar to Europe in the 17th century.

The experts also hope that their work will contribute to the development of the perfumery and chemical industries. As for the historical background, the ability to smell from the past is a great addition to the existing museum exhibits.
