Zoologists from Montenegro have discovered a new species of snails in one of the country's reservoirs. The discovery was made in 2019, but the name of the new individual was only recently invented.
The discovered
snail has a milky-white elongated cone-shaped shell. Molluscs belong to the family of so-called mud snails, which inhabit the fresh and brackish water of underground reservoirs.
The name of the previously unexplored individual was invented by the scientists who were the authors of the discovery. The clam was named after the Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic. A snail with a milky-white shell "inherited" the second part - the name of the athlete.
As the researchers note, in order to discover a new animal, bird or insect, you need to get to those places that have not been previously studied. These can be bodies of water, vegetation, or mountain ranges.
For months, zoologists have been trying to determine if their find is something new or a subspecies of already existing molluscs. But testing, as well as analysis of habitats made it possible to state unequivocally - this is a new shell.
The snail got the name of the Serbian tennis player for a reason. Researchers from Montenegro have drawn a parallel between the speed of an athlete and a shellfish. It may sound sarcastic, but Novak Djokovic received the news of the snail's name with great enthusiasm.
Zoologists continue testing the reservoir, where they discovered a new species of molluscs. Scientists hope to find other members of this family as well. Perhaps they will soon be able to do this. Otherwise, they will simply change their place of "deployment".
