Seoul designers have developed tires, which are based on the principle of paper movement in origami. The wheels fold in and out to adapt to different terrain.

Visually, the tire is a three-layer construction based on a composite membrane. To enhance wear resistance and strength, the latter is combined with aluminum facets.

The novelty from Seoul developers varies from 46 to 80 cm. It maintains a weight corresponding to the parameters of a full-fledged car.

Wheels can be compressed to minimum diameters. When compressed, they unfold, pushing out the locking plates. The latter are responsible for the rigidity of the entire structure.

For testing purposes, a team of scientists equipped a demonstration prototype with origami wheels. Also, pressure plates have been added, which are responsible for changing the diameter.

As for the practical benefits, they plan to use the development in relation to small robots. Wheels with a changeable diameter will allow you to move accurately and quickly, to overcome various obstacles.

Among the weak points, Seoul experts named the unevenness and bumpiness of the surface of the wheels. Previous prototypes included similar design components. But in the new version of the tires, the disadvantages of movement on muddy ground are taken into account.

The existing shortcomings can cause low competitiveness. Origami wheels consider them to be simply not commercially viable. Therefore, they do not expect the development to be a runaway success. But the designers will make final statements only after the completion of the tests.
