The American company Switch Maritime is completing the construction of the first commercial ferry using hydrogen fuel. The project is 98% complete.

The height of the passenger ferry is 22 meters. In two approaches, water transport can carry 84 passengers. The maximum speed that two electric motors can develop reaches 22 knots (41 km / h).

Passengers can be accommodated both inside and outside the raft. However, in the second case, their number will be ¼ of occupancy.

There are several decks on board the ferry, including closed ones. Fuel tanks are located on the roof. Blue-dyed hydrogen fillers blend seamlessly with the exterior of waterborne vehicles.

A large fuel cell is responsible for converting hydrogen into electricity. The principle of operation of the system is based on the distillation of a compressed gaseous chemical substance. It is believed that the ferry will be the first commercial watercraft of its kind to operate on a single tank for several days.

According to the company representatives, the ferry is planned to be used for passenger transportation. For cargo transportation, the designers decided to develop a more enhanced version. It is possible that the vessel will provide excursion travel along the west coast of the United States.

Over the next few months, the ferry will be in the port of San Francisco, where all test trials are ending. The technical and functional capabilities of the new water transport are being tested.

The expected term for the launch of the ferry into operation is the third quarter of 2021.
