Creative artist brings old books to life

Artist Su Blackwell creates stories from old books that have their own stories.

A woman cuts out of paper, then glues, characters from famous books. Sometimes Su Blackwell comes up with whole compositions. In her works, the Little Prince of Erich Maria Remarque, Alice Lewis Carroll and others come to life.

Work on a new art object begins with the selection of a book. Su Blackwell often finds half-torn editions at flea markets, book sales. Sometimes her friends and acquaintances bring her books.

Then the woman chooses the plot she plans to portray. Flips through children's books, revises films, creates sketches on paper. This is the most crucial stage of the work, because imagination, memory, attention are connected here.

Once the future storyline has been chosen, Su Blackwell moves on to preparing the tools and materials. The artist considers scissors, scalpels and tweezers to be her main assistants. Of course, it is not complete without glue. After all, the details of paper sculptures need to be held together somehow.

As for the material, these are entire pages, without folds, dislocations and breaks. The amount of text doesn't matter.
Su Blackwell was fond of paper sculpture and paper carving as a child. She lived for a long time outside the city, where she often visited the forest. There, fantastic ideas came to the child's head - the interweaving of reality and fiction.

Su Blackwell has repeatedly shown her book masterpieces to the public. The artist's arsenal already includes several joint and personal exhibitions. But she has no plans to stop there. He is in the "active search" for books.
