Metal and printed - the first bridge in Amsterdam to be 3D printed

The first 3D printed bridge was built in Amsterdam. Its author was the designer Joris Laarman.

The bridge is of a standard design, without overlapping. Consists of stainless steel, approx. 4500 kg of steel. Or over 27 tons of carbon trapped. The bridge is equipped with sensors that help to record various data - pedestrian traffic, the presence of corrosive phenomena, changes in load and environmental conditions.

Another interesting feature of the printed design is the ability to simulate various situations, load conditions.

The bridge was built by the Dutch robotics company MX3D for six years. Specialized software was used to help create parametric models. Robots were used to weld the frame.

The decision to print a bridge equipped with a series of sensors came to the author of the project about seven years ago. He wanted to create a structure that could withstand different loads. At the same time, the fact of adaptation was paramount.

Joris Laarman chose a site for the construction, collected data on nearby objects and started designing. The design phase took about a year. After that, the designer proceeded to implement the plan for printing and installing the bridge. Specialists from MX3D played an important role in the work.

In the section "PCs, laptops, tablets, office equipment" among the technical devices you can find many devices for printing. However, it is unlikely that bridges can be printed on them, except for parts of them.
