It has long been known that various external factors influence our perception of the taste of food and drink. Professional chefs try to arrange dishes so that they look as effective and aesthetically pleasing as possible.

Sommeliers claim that the taste of wine in an expensive glass tastes better than in cheap paper versions. Researchers from Japan proved that not only the appearance and material of the dishes matters on taste buds. They discovered this thanks to a special glass that can change the center of gravity in the hand.

Japanese university student Masaharu Hirose, along with his curator Masahiko Inami, while traveling around Europe, noticed one peculiarity. The taste of the wine changed from country to country along with changes in the shape of the serving utensils.

Researchers wondered if it was possible to achieve a similar effect experimentally. They have developed a device that at first glance looks very strange: a cup holder is located on a mechanism with a sliding weight and a special mount. The gadget changes the weight of the cup holder when the person brings it to their lips.

Masaharu and Masahiko are preparing to showcase their invention at the August 2021 Siggraph, and so far they have conducted a series of studies. The volunteers participating in the experiments noted that the taste of the drink becomes brighter and more pronounced at the moment when the glass becomes heavier. This fact has become a confirmation that the taste of certain products is influenced not only by the way of serving and aesthetics in the design of dishes, but also by the weight of the dishes.
