Researchers have figured out how to make brain implants soft and, as a result, reduce the risk of rejection. Prototypes already on the market are equipped with electrodes and are very rigid. Moreover, the gray matter into which they integrate is soft. As a result, the immune system often perceives them as foreign substances. And the tissue begins to scar around them. The scar layer reaches a thickness that interferes with the correct operation of the implant. Despite the fact that the electrodes are made of elastic material, the rigidity of such substances exceeds the rigidity of the brain. Accordingly, the risk of an immune response is always exceeded.
Researchers working with KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) have come up with an alternative solution. They made an implant from nanosized polymer beams. Multifunctional substances are embedded in the surrounding tissues of the polyacrylamide-alginate hydrogel.
Polymer fibers are made from an optical waveguide that stimulates neurons when exposed to light. Point transportation of substances is carried out by three microelectrodes through microfluidic channels.
At the time of the introduction of the hydrogel into the brain, it has a rigid structure. Therefore, this can be done without additional guiding devices. But when the hydrogel is in the membranes of the brain, it begins to absorb liquid and softens. Accordingly, the immune system accepts the implant more easily and does not cause a rejection reaction.
