Scientists have constructed a robot that has been trained to mimic the simplest fighting in the likeness of a mantis shrimp. They weren't satisfied with the test results, but it was a breakthrough.

In the created device, the mechanics of crustacean strikes were modeled. First, a robotic model is assembled, and then its movements are mathematically calculated. Four phases of impact were involved - from closed sclerites to appendage impact.

In the process of modeling the movements of the praying mantis shrimp, the researchers concluded that this is a very complex and powerful process. In real conditions, the result of a fight can be a severed crab leg or a punctured snail shell.

Since the complexity and force of the impact of the aforementioned crustacean is a consequence of the basic mechanism, then the details can only be learned on the basis of its simulation. Which, in fact, did the scientists.

It is noted that not only mantis shrimp can move quickly and deliver lightning strikes. Chameleons, frogs, as well as some plant species follow this path. They first store energy and then release it. In this case, mechanisms that resemble latches are often used.

The robot was tested successfully. This is despite the fact that the 1.5 gram device was unable to reach the speed of a mantis shrimp. But his strikes were much faster than similar robots.
