Tower house on the Greek coast: a modernized history

The tower, located on the line of the Greek Cape Tynaron, has been transformed into a luxurious atmospheric guest house by the companion architects Kassiani Theodorakakou and Kostas Zouvelos. The Tainaron Blue Retreat was erected on the outskirts of the Mani Peninsula in the 19th century with the aim of protecting settlements from enemy attacks.

The building is considered an important part of history. And the first challenge for the architects was to preserve its original structure. Therefore, Kostas and Kassiani focused on the harmonious integration of modern innovations within existing premises.

“The reconstruction of the traditional building eliminated the question of the form of the project. The old stone masonry forms the final look of the tower, protruding from the rock with which it is connected, ”said the architects. The foundation of the building is made of the same stone as the tower itself.

For Tainaron Blue Retreat, the designers used the traditional kourasani building material for the area. For its manufacture, ceramic powder, cement, river sand and local soil called Theraic are used.

The adjacent territory of the guest house tower has been enhanced with a lovely terrace and chic pools in the same style as the entire building.
