Startup WeWalk has unveiled a development that will make life easier for blind people. WeWALK is a smart cane that can locate objects using ultrasound. The gadget works with a smartphone. It will easily detect such dangers for a visually impaired person as parked cars, steps, curbs, as well as objects that are located overhead, etc.
WeWALK is a handpiece that is equipped with a touch panel. It attaches to any ordinary cane. The battery is charged via the USB input. A full charge takes about 5 hours, which is enough for 20 hours of operation.
Communicates with smart cane devices via Bluetooth. To activate the step-by-step instructions, the device integrates with the Google Maps application. In addition, the cane provides information on public transport routes and taxis. Thanks to this, WeWALK will facilitate movement in megacities. Communication with the Alexa voice assistant is supported through the built-in microphone and speaker.
The cane attachment costs almost $600. This price is not available to everyone. Therefore, the developers of the gadget hope to obtain subsidies from the state, and establish cooperation with charitable organizations in order to become the owner of a cane for everyone, regardless of their financial situation.
"The goal of our company is to produce products that harmoniously combine the leading functions of such gadgets as the Apple Watch or FitBit. That is, to create hardware that will become an indispensable assistant for people with disabilities.", - the company representatives said.
