Bamboo comfort: a collection of lampshades by a designer from China

Chinese designer Jun Jie Zhang released the original Bamboo Softness series of lampshades, demonstrating the full potential of bamboo. Lighting fixtures in light colors were presented by Zhango for the first time at the Design Shanghai specialized exhibition. They became a continuation of the thematic collection of the design studio Sozen, founded by Jun Jie Zhang himself.

The collection is made of twisting bamboo ribbons that form hollow spaces to be used as a lampshade. When the light is on, complex patterns of bamboo lines create multifaceted shadows. Thanks to this, the interior becomes soft and voluminous.

In the process of creating the line, the designer resorted to the help of computer-aided design for the effect of a "viscous" shape. Thanks to this solution, the lampshades look weightless and delicate. Recreations of 3-d models are made manually by the designer.

Zhang started his experiments with bamboo 8 years ago. The master turned to traditional Chinese technologies and adapted them into objects that are relevant to the modern world.

His Bamboo Softness project aims to test the limits of bamboo's elasticity and showcase its softer characteristics.

“On the one hand, bamboo is a very strong material. On the other hand, it is endowed with special elasticity and softness. This is very characteristic of Eastern philosophy. I want to make the most of bamboo,” Zhang shared.
