Researchers at the University of Gothenburg have found a new way to treat sleep apnea. The action of the drug is based on the inhibition of carbonic anhydrase, which balances the content of carbon dioxide and carbonic acid in the body.

Similar drugs have previously been used to treat epilepsy and glaucoma. However, KA inhibitors have been used as a drug alternative for the treatment of apnea for the first time.

Scientists conducted a number of clinical studies, which involved patients with moderate and severe forms of breathing disorders during sleep. Two groups of volunteers received 200 and 400 mg of the Ca inhibitor for a month. Another subgroup received a placebo.

According to professor of pulmonology Jan Hedner, experiments have shown that the frequency of respiratory arrest during sleep while taking the maximum dose of medication decreased by 20 times. In a third of the participants in the experiment, the number of respiratory pauses decreased by 5o%, and in every fifth patient - by 60%. But in several volunteers who took higher doses of the drug, adverse reactions were observed: shortness of breath and headache.
