Pixels as Art: Taiwan Wood Carver Uses Unusual Sculpting Technique

Wooden sculptures of unusual shape are carved by Taiwanese craftsman Hsu Tun Han. He uses pixels as inspiration.

In his works, the sculptor uses block details. They seem to exist outside of space and time. They add volume and dynamism to the finished product.

From the tree Hsu Tun Han creates animals and birds, people. The latter are representatives of different professions, historical figures. The sculptor makes athletes very dynamically - hockey players, wrestlers.

Hsu Tun Khan's plot compositions can also be noted. As a rule, these are tragic scenes of struggle, instructive moments or images with a hidden meaning. Sometimes these are even parts of structures - a wall, a staircase or a door. But even in such a composition there is a person.

Hsu Tun Khan's work with sculpture begins with the choice of a tree. He cooperates with many local furniture manufacturers, so he does not experience a shortage of material.

The sculptor then proceeds to create a sketch on paper. Inspired by the surrounding nature, people, different life situations, the image of the future sculpture is born.

Carving is one of the main and at the same time the final stages of working with wood. Often, Hsu Tun Khan has to add some details, adjust the finished product. This can take almost as long as the cutting itself.

The final step is sanding and varnishing.
